It’s not surprising that there’s a guidebook for those considering moving to Merida in our apartment, but the discovery gave me a surge of joy. It felt as though someone knew my secret dream. I took it with me this morning to read on the beach. It’s filled with helpful advice and I learned a bit about the rich history of Merida. It was especially fun reading about some of the places we’ve already visited. I wrote about having dinner in Santa Lucia in a previous post. That neighbourhood has undergone tremendous transformation since 2013 when many of the buildings surrounding Santa Lucia Park were closed. The author says that after decades of neglect, the neighbourhood is now a jewel. He credits young Mexican entrepreneurs for “reshaping and reimagining what Merida’s historic centre can become: alive with life!” Agreed!
While some expats move to Merida, others choose the beach towns of Progreso and surrounding places. Either way, you can get to the other in about half an hour by bus!
So far we’ve been dreaming more towards the beach side. If you’re curious about homes in either place, take a peak at Yucatan Home Finders. We rented our condo from Roma Barss who is a Canadian realtor working winters here in the Yucatan.

We went to Merida a few weeks ago and fell in love with the town and it’s people. We definitely want to go back and explore more of the surrounding areas and the beaches.

Sounds like a great plan! We’re hoping to come back soon and spend more time exploring. There’s so much to see and do!
It’s awesome to see you blogging about traveling with your children! When mine were young, we did lots of camping and travelled across Canada in a little camper van. As adults, both my kids have the travel bug – Im so happy for them and it’s rewarding to see them saving and planning for trips 🙂 And of course I love hearing about their travels.
